What is somewhat odd about this generator is how it must stay dry. Briggs & Stratton said most people place a portable awning or canopy over it. So ultimately it shouldn’t be an issue, but is a minor inconvenience.
The Briggs and Stratton Storm Responder 5500 is a very basic generator. It doesn’t come with a lot of bells and whistles, but it gets the job done. Briggs and Stratton has an excellent reputation and is a trusted brand. If you are looking for a portable generator with 5500 watts or so, this one should be highly considered.

I purchased this generator in august of 2008, a few days before hurricane gustav hit louisiana. Power was out for 6 days. after the storm it was brutally hot and muggy. This machine powered a window unit, refrigerator, several fans, and a few lights. It is not large enough to run the whole house, but provided enough power for us to be comfortable. Changed the oil after five hours and then every 2 days, ran like a top. Since the storm, i have used this generator at my camp and on a few jobsites. it cranks on the first or second pull. great value. – Bill
This is the best to get through the tough times. I have had no power for three days I adapted the the plug and ran my oil boiler, well, microwave, TV, DVD, lights to five rooms with energy efficient bulbs on the main floor and three additional lights also with energy efficient bulbs. The listing in the manual will explain how many watts per appliance or lights you can run. Oh and I am on my computer typing this now. GREAT PRODUCT!!! Follow the directions and you will be OK too!! – Mikes21
This machine did exactly what it advertized. I managed to run my well, Oil burner, and septic pumps as well as power up quite a few lights in the house when used sparingly. I was amazed how a machine of this size was able to deliver soo much comfort during a time of need. I would highly recommend this machine. My only issue was that it did not come with a 220 locking plug and during a major outage it was difficult to find the connectors required to tie in to the house. – kjk1
