Review: Powermate PM0435001 5000 Watt Portable Generator
|
The Powermate 5000 watt portable generator is a very basic, down and dirty type of portable generator. It’s designed as an emergency power source at home and as a power source at a jobsite. At 5000 continuous wattage, you should be able to power all your essential appliances. These include your refrigerator, lights, sump pump, freezer, radio, fan, and other items. At the job site, you can power many tools including drills, grinders, sprayers, circular saws, and others. It comes with a 6 gallon gas tank, and can be run it for 11 hours at 50% load. The gas tank and run time are similar for most other portable generators.

Some people have owned it for over five years and it’s still working strong. A cast iron engine sleeve protects the engine from possible damage over time.
Also, you should get it to start without having to pull more then two times, no matter how cold the weather is.
Dependability is huge with portable generators, you want to feel confident that it will work when the power goes out. This is a huge benefit of the Powermate 5000.
The mobility kit is standard with never flat wheels and folding handles for greater portability. This especially is beneficial when using on the jobsite, since the terrain can be rough and because of how often it needs to be moved.
Cons
Some will say that this generator is noisy, others say it isn’t. Personally, I think it’s a little more noisy than some other portable generators. However, compared to others it’s fairly quiet. I will just say that it probably isn’t the loudest or quietest portable generator on the market.
The other downfall for me is the lack of additional features. For example, there is no hour meter to tell you how long it’s been running, and no fuel gauge. While this isn’t the end of the world, these features are still nice to have.
Overall
Very well built portable generator. It’s very durable, reliable, has enough power to supply the essentials, and comes with a very generous 3 year warranty. This is also a very solid brand that can be trusted.

First thing that stood out for me was the Subaru engine with the cast iron sleeve, low compression pull start, reduced internal parts, enhanced oil slinger for better lubrication, high-end power curve, and low-noise exhaust. I abused this generator in a 2 year period and it runs like a champ still today. I have gone 300 or more hours of run time without changing the oil and no problems. I have put over 1200 hours on the engine and expect to put much more than that on it. I have run this gen for 18 hours straight (refueled while running) for a two day period with no problems. – bob robertd
This generator has never left my family in the dark or the cold. I wired my house for this generator and it has never let us down. I know that we over work this machine, but never once did it die out or slow down for me. It is ran each and every month whether the power is out or not. I do keep it very clean and 3/4 full of fuel at all times. I do run it under a load with 1 heat gun (1800 watts), and 1 hair dryer (1500 watts) each month. I also use Sta-bil in the gas tank , and store the generator in an outside shed. – Bryn Rutecky
Had this one before as a standby hurricane generator a few years ago. It ran my house (and my neighbors’ who plugged in to my outdoor outlets) for days. It ran like a champ and noticeably quieter than the others I and my friends have had. I lost it in the divorce, so I’m buying the exact same one again! – Glenn C
